Crop PDF Pages With a Visual Selection Box
PDF pages can contain large blank margins, scanner borders or extra space around a diagram, table or document image. Those areas can make content feel small on a screen and can waste space when a document is printed or viewed on a mobile device. JustPDFConverter's Crop PDF tool lets you select the visible area of a page using an on-screen crop box. Drag the box to reposition it, resize it with the handles and choose whether the crop should apply to all pages or only the current page.
The cropping workflow is visual rather than numeric. You work directly with a rendered page preview and use the selection handles to define the area to keep. The tool does not expose separate fields for entering exact top, bottom, left and right measurements in millimeters or points. It also does not provide a preset gallery of page sizes. The preview is the main control, so zoom in or change the page layout when you need to position the crop boundary more carefully.
How to Crop a PDF Online
- Select your PDF. Open Crop PDF and choose one or more PDF documents. The workspace loads a page preview and shows navigation controls.
- Choose the page scope. Select All pages to use one crop area throughout the document, or Current page to adjust only the page you are working on.
- Draw or adjust the crop box. Click and drag on the page to create a selection, or use the handles to move and resize the existing box.
- Review the selected area. Navigate through pages and inspect how the crop fits the content. Use zoom and the available page layout options to make accurate visual adjustments.
- Apply the crop. Click Crop PDF to save the selected page area. The tool creates a new PDF for each input document.
- Download and inspect. When multiple PDFs were selected, download the ZIP archive and extract the individual cropped documents. Check the result before replacing or sharing the original.
The selection box defines the area that remains visible in the cropped result. Content outside the crop boundary is not part of the visible page area after the crop is applied. Keep the selection inside the page and leave enough room around text, footnotes, page numbers, signatures or other details that must remain visible.
Crop All Pages or Only the Current Page
All pages mode is intended for a document where the same crop boundary works throughout the PDF. This can be helpful for scans with consistent borders, a report where every page uses a similar margin or a set of pages that were exported with the same excess whitespace. Set the crop box on the preview and the tool uses that selection across the pages in the document. Review several pages before saving because page content may not line up identically from one sheet to the next.
Current page mode is useful when only one page needs a different crop. Navigate to the intended page, adjust the selection box and keep the scope set to Current page. Other pages remain at their original visible bounds in the normal PDF editing path. You can move to another page and define a different crop when you need to correct more than one page individually. The page navigation controls help you locate the sheet you want to adjust.
Changing from Current page to All pages uses the active crop selection as the common crop area. Because the same geometry is then applied throughout the document, inspect pages with different layouts, page sizes or margins before processing. A crop that is suitable for a text page may cut off a chart title or footer on another page. If pages have substantially different content placement, current-page adjustments may be more appropriate.
Move and Resize the Crop Area
The crop overlay includes a central area and resize handles around its edges and corners. Drag inside the selection to move the whole crop box. Drag a side handle to adjust one dimension, or a corner handle to change both width and height. You can also begin a new selection by dragging on the page outside the current crop region. This allows you to define the visible area from the page itself rather than estimating measurements in a separate settings panel.
The page view can be changed to make navigation more comfortable. Single-page view focuses on one sheet, double-page view shows two pages side by side, and cover-style layout treats the first page as a separate cover before pairing later pages. Zoom and fit controls help you see more of a page or inspect a smaller region. These controls affect how the document is presented in the workspace; the crop box remains the actual selection used for processing.
The initial crop rectangle is inset from the page edges, leaving a modest border around the central area. Adjust it to include any margins or content you want to keep. If you are unsure how much of the page to remove, start conservatively and inspect the preview rather than cropping close to the text. A crop that is too tight can remove context that is difficult to restore from the cropped output.
What Cropping Changes in the PDF
When the PDF can be processed through the normal editing path, the tool updates the page crop and media boundaries in the PDF document. This changes the visible page area without first converting every page into a screenshot. Text, images and vector objects can therefore remain as PDF content on this path. Cropping does not rewrite the paragraph text or edit an image inside the page; it changes which part of the page is shown.
For encrypted or complex documents that cannot be processed through the normal route, the tool can fall back to rendering pages with the PDF viewer and rebuilding them from JPEG images. This fallback creates a visual result but can change the document's structure. Text may no longer be selectable, links and vector graphics may not remain interactive, and fine detail depends on the rendered image quality. If preserving searchability or vector detail is essential, inspect the saved output carefully and use a PDF editor that can crop the source file natively when the fallback has been used.
The tool may request a password when the PDF is protected and needs to be opened for preview or fallback processing. Enter the correct password that you already have. The crop tool does not recover unknown passwords. Save a copy of the original before processing any document that you may need to revise again later.
Crop Multiple PDFs in One Session
The workspace supports selecting multiple PDF documents. This can be useful when several scans or reports need the same general trimming treatment. Each source PDF is processed separately and saved as its own cropped PDF; the tool does not combine the selected documents into one merged file. When multiple inputs are selected, the generated PDFs are bundled in a ZIP archive for download.
For a group of files, confirm that the crop area makes sense for each document. Files may have different paper dimensions, scanner borders or content placement. A selection that works for one may remove a heading or signature from another. Review the active file preview and the page content before applying a shared crop workflow to a large collection. If the documents require very different trimming, process them in smaller groups.
Common Reasons to Crop a PDF
- Remove scanner borders: trim dark edges, shadow bands or excess blank space around a scanned page.
- Focus on a diagram: keep a useful chart, figure or table within a tighter visible page area.
- Improve screen reading: reduce unused margins so the important content occupies more of the viewing area.
- Prepare a handout: crop pages to remove unwanted surrounding space before sharing or printing.
- Correct a page: apply a unique selection to one page without changing the rest of the document.
Review the Cropped PDF Before Sharing
Cropping can make a page cleaner, but a selection that is too small can remove necessary information. Inspect the first page, several middle pages and the final page. Pay particular attention to page numbers, footnotes, table headings, signatures and content close to the edges. If the document uses different page layouts, check each affected page rather than assuming a single crop boundary fits every sheet.
After download, open the PDF in a reader and compare it with the original. Check that the intended area remains visible and that the document still behaves as expected. For a file that passed through the raster fallback, test text selection and zoom into small details. Keep the original source document until the cropped copy has been approved.
A Practical Visual PDF Cropping Workflow
Start with the page area you want to preserve, choose All pages or Current page, then place the crop box carefully around the content. Use the preview and page navigation to check that the selection is suitable. Apply the crop, download the resulting PDF or ZIP and review the final document. This visual workflow is intended for trimming page boundaries; it is not a redaction tool. If sensitive information sits outside the crop box, remember that changing the visible page boundary is not necessarily equivalent to securely deleting the underlying content. Use a true redaction process when information must be irreversibly removed.
