Add Page Numbers to a PDF Online
Number your PDF pages cleanly for court filings, academic papers, and executive reports. Customize font typography, positioning, format (Page X of Y), and start offsets.
Add Consistent Page Numbers to a PDF
Page numbers make a long PDF easier to navigate during review, printing, meetings and document handoff. They help readers refer to a particular section without counting pages manually, and they make multi-page reports or application packets easier to discuss. JustPDFConverter's Page Numbers tool adds a visible number to each page of one selected PDF and creates a new numbered copy for download.
The current interface keeps the choices focused. You can display a simple sequence such as 1, 2, 3... or use the fuller Page 1 of N style, which includes the document's total page count. You can position the number at the bottom center, bottom right, bottom left or top right. The selected position and format are applied across the pages processed in that run.
How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
- Choose one PDF. Open Page Numbers and select the document you want to paginate. The current interface processes one PDF file at a time.
- Choose a numbering format. Select
Page 1 of Nto show the current page and total number of pages, or choose the simple numeric sequence. - Select a position. Choose bottom center, bottom right, bottom left or top right. Think about existing footers, headers and page content before choosing a location.
- Add the numbers. Click Add Page Numbers. The tool applies the numbering to the document pages and creates a new PDF output.
- Review the result. Open the numbered PDF and inspect pages with existing footers, tables, stamps or content near the selected edge. Confirm that the numbers are visible and do not cover important information.
Choose the Format That Fits the Document
The simple numeric format is appropriate when readers only need a sequence. A report, checklist, handout or scanned packet can often use 1, 2, 3... without additional wording. The Page X of Y format is helpful when a reader needs immediate context about the document's total length. For example, a footer that reads Page 4 of 18 tells the reader both the current location and how many pages are expected in the complete file.
The tool uses the page order in the PDF it receives. Numbering begins at 1 and continues through the document's pages. There is no control in the current interface for skipping a cover, beginning from a custom offset, using Roman numerals, adding a prefix such as Appendix, or choosing an arbitrary page range. If a document needs those rules, prepare the page sequence first or use a PDF pagination application with more advanced numbering controls.
Position Options and Visual Placement
Bottom center is a familiar choice for reports and reading documents. Bottom right is common in business paperwork and manuals, while bottom left can suit a layout whose right footer is already occupied. Top right is available when the lower margin contains a footer or signature area. Only these four preset positions are exposed; top center and top left are not selectable in the current tool.
The current implementation embeds the standard Helvetica font at a fixed 10-point size and uses a medium gray color. It does not offer controls for font family, font size, boldness, color, opacity, exact margin offsets or custom coordinates. The position is calculated from the PDF page dimensions. Because documents use different page sizes and margin layouts, inspect the result on both portrait and landscape pages before sharing it.
What Happens to Existing Page Content
For a PDF that the normal PDF library can load, the tool draws the page number on each existing page and saves a new PDF. The original page content remains underneath the newly drawn number, so a number can overlap an existing footer, page label or other object if the chosen position is already occupied. It does not reflow paragraphs or reserve new space in the page layout.
If the normal load path fails, the handler has a fallback that opens the file through PDF.js, renders each page to a canvas and creates a new PDF page with the rendered image plus the page number. When that fallback is used, text may no longer be selectable, and links, forms, annotations, bookmarks and other interactive structures may not remain as their original objects. A protected PDF may require its password for this fallback. Review the resulting file carefully if accessibility, search, signatures or editable forms are important.
Practical Uses for Numbered PDFs
- Reports and proposals: make it easier for reviewers to reference a particular page in a meeting or email.
- Training manuals: give staff a consistent way to locate instructions and exercises.
- Application packets: make supporting documents easier to discuss when a recipient asks for a specific page.
- Scanned records: add a visible sequence to a group of scans that has already been assembled into one PDF.
- Study material: help students and teachers refer to the same page during a lesson or discussion.
Review the Output Before Sharing
After downloading, check the first page, middle pages and last page, then inspect any page with a busy footer or content near the top-right corner. Make sure the numbering starts at 1, increments in the expected order and shows the right total when Page X of Y is selected. Check rotated pages and pages with unusual dimensions because the available placement is calculated from each page's size.
The Page Numbers tool is designed for straightforward pagination: one PDF, two numbering formats and four preset positions. It does not replace a full desktop publishing workflow with section numbering, custom offsets, exclusion rules or typography controls. When those simple options match the document, it provides a quick way to create a numbered copy without manually editing each page.
