Split a PDF by Page Range or Extract Individual Pages
Break bulky PDF documents into bite-sized files, pluck individual pages, or separate multi-chapter reports by custom ranges without re-encoding or losing text formatting.
Split a Long PDF into Smaller, More Useful Files
A PDF may contain far more information than a recipient needs. A contract packet can include several schedules when only one section needs to be reviewed. A course reader may combine chapters that are assigned at different times. A large collection of statements might need to be separated into monthly files. Split PDF helps you work with one PDF at a time and divide it into smaller documents, or extract the pages you need into a separate PDF.
The workspace first reads the selected PDF and displays its page count. It can show page thumbnails as they are loaded, helping you identify the beginning and end of a section before you split it. You can then choose between range-based splitting, page extraction and a target-size mode. Each approach solves a different document task, so choose the one that matches how you want the output organized.
Three Ways to Separate PDF Pages
Range mode is useful when the document should be divided into defined sections. Set one or more custom page ranges, such as pages 1-4, 5-9 and 10-14. You can keep the ranges as separate PDF files or merge the selected ranges into one output document. The fixed-range option divides the source into repeating groups, such as one page per file or five pages per file, and packages multiple results into a ZIP archive.
Pages mode is designed for extracting individual pages. You can select all pages or enter specific page numbers and intervals in the page selection field. For example, 1, 3, 7-9 identifies pages 1, 3, 7, 8 and 9. The selected pages can be combined into one extracted PDF or saved as separate single-page PDFs. When multiple separate files are created, the tool prepares a ZIP download so they can be downloaded together.
Size mode groups consecutive pages into parts using a target size expressed in KB or MB. It estimates the size as it adds pages and starts a new part when the current group crosses the chosen threshold. Since PDF pages are indivisible in this process, a single unusually large page can exceed the requested size by itself. Treat the value as a splitting target, not a guarantee that every resulting file will stay below an exact upload limit.
How to Split a PDF
- Choose one PDF file. Select or drop the PDF you want to divide. Split PDF processes one source PDF in a session.
- Choose the method. Open Range to define page intervals, Pages to select pages, or Size to set a target part size.
- Set the page instructions. Enter the start and end of each range, choose the fixed number of pages per part, select the required page numbers, or set a KB/MB target.
- Decide how results should be grouped. Depending on the mode, keep ranges together in one file or create separate PDFs for each range or page.
- Split and download. Start the split operation. A single result is offered as a PDF, while multiple outputs are bundled into a ZIP file.
Choose an Output That Matches the Task
Use one combined extracted PDF when the pages belong together and need to be shared as a single excerpt. Use separate outputs when different recipients need different sections, when each chapter should be stored independently, or when a batch of page images must be reviewed one at a time. If you are preparing a large report for a portal with upload limits, Size mode can divide it into consecutive sections. Always check the actual sizes after downloading, especially when one page contains a large scan or photograph.
Page order follows the source document for extracted pages and follows the ranges you enter for range mode. Review the page numbers carefully before processing. An off-by-one range can leave out a signature page, include an unrelated appendix or create an incomplete chapter. The page previews are a visual aid, but the range values and the source PDF page numbering determine what is copied to the output.
Preserve the Parts You Need, Not the Entire Document
The splitter copies selected pages into new PDF documents rather than rewriting their text as a new Word file. This is useful when the goal is to keep the selected PDF pages as PDFs. It does not edit the text inside the pages, remove confidential information from a page, or add annotations. If a page contains private details, simply splitting around it is not a substitute for properly redacting the content from any pages that will be shared.
The size option is also not a PDF compression feature. It groups pages by the size of the growing output; it does not reduce image resolution or rewrite each page to make it smaller. If the source PDF is too large because it contains high-resolution scans, use Compress PDF separately and review the resulting quality. You can then split the compressed file if smaller sections are still required.
Examples of Everyday Uses
- Contracts: extract only the clauses, exhibits or signature section needed for a review.
- School and training material: divide a combined reader into weekly chapters or assignment sections.
- Reports: save the executive summary separately from the supporting schedules and appendices.
- Finance: separate selected statements or invoice pages from a larger archive.
- Portal submissions: divide a long document into consecutive parts that are easier to upload and handle.
Check the Split Files Before You Send Them
After processing, open the PDF or extract the ZIP archive and confirm that all expected files are present. Check the first and last page of each part, verify that page numbers match your intended ranges and ensure that the files open in a PDF reader. For Size mode, inspect the actual file sizes rather than relying only on the target shown in the interface. For page extraction, check that the output contains only the pages you selected.
The split operation runs in the browser, so processing time depends on the PDF size, page count and available device memory. Very large documents can require additional time to load and copy. Keep the original PDF until all output files have been reviewed. When the pages are correct, rename the parts clearly - for example, Report-Part-01.pdf and Report-Part-02.pdf - so the files remain easy to identify after download.
